BMC Mayor to meet residents every week from Sunday

Kolkata: Krishna Chakrabaorty, Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), will meet the residents of each ward during an initiative called 'Apnar Ward E Apnar Mayor' (your Mayor in your ward). The first session of the initiative will take place on Sunday morning in Keshtopur.

According to sources, after becoming the Mayor of BMC, Chakraborty had proposed to her councillors that she wanted to have a friendly interaction with the local residents.

As soon as the councillors appreciated the thought, it was decided that from September, Chakraborty will interact with people. It was also decided that in each session, residents from two wards will be able to interact with the Mayor.

"This will help us understand the problems of citizens and act accordingly," said Chakraborty.

On Sunday, the first session of 'Apnar Ward E Apnar Mayor' will take place at Kalamandir auditorium in Keshtopur, where people from ward 23 and 24 will be present.

Asha Nandi, councillor of ward 23, praised the initiative, stating: "It is a very good decision as the Mayor herself wishes to interact with common people. Sometimes we could not convey exactly what people want, due to some communication gap. Through this initiative, people can tell her what they want directly."

Anupam Mondal, councillor of ward 24, also welcomed the step and thanked the Mayor for her proactiveness to hear from common people.

It may be recalled that a similar initiative has been undertaken by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) from July this year, where people can directly call and interact with Mayor Firhad Hakim.

The step by KMC and Hakim has been found to be successful, as several citizens have called up and told the Mayor about their problems and grievances related to municipal services.

However, this is the first time a Mayor will interact with citizens directly. It

has been decided that each week, residents of two wards will be allowed to meet Chakraborty.
