Kolkata: A chaos broke out in front of the Swasthya Bhavan in Salt Lake on Monday after hundreds of BJP supporters staged a
demonstration protesting against the dengue outbreak in the city.
The BJP workers marched down to the Swasthya Bhavan from Karunamoyee on Monday, broke the police barricade completely paralysing the traffic movement in the area.
They wanted to submit a memorandum to the Health department officials as they claimed that dengue deaths in the city are on the rise and state government has failed to take adequate measures. The police officers posted outside the Swasthya Bhavan urged the BJP leaders not to move further beyond a certain point where the barricade was set up.
However, the adamant BJP workers refused to the appeal and charged the police as the agitators were denied access to the Swasthya Bhavan. The agitators became infuriated and broke the barricade. Police, however, stopped them from entering into the Swasthya Bhavan.
The incident triggered tension in the area. Many of the staff members also faced difficulties while entering and leaving Swasthya Bhavan. It had also led to traffic congestion in the area.
Traffic movement was disrupted in several places of Salt Lake as the BJP workers marched down the streets shouting slogans.
Police have arrested some of the BJP leaders for creating nuisance. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot immediately after the chaos broke out and brought the situation under control within few hours.
The BJP leaders also demanded that the state government must publish white papers to provide the total number of patients suffering from dengue. Some of the BJP's Mahila Morcha activists put up mosquito nets on the streets too.
