Bidhannagar Police sees overwhelming response for 'Sahayak Jan' initiative
Kolkata: Bidhannagar City Police has received overwhelming response to their initiative 'Sahayak Jan', with more than 200 people already having approached the police for service.
The initiative was introduced by the Traffic department of Bidhannagar City Police which started since Saturday. According to Deputy Commissioner (DC), Traffic of Bidhannagar City Police Dhritiman Sarkar, the service is mainly for the elderly people who are feeling helpless while going anywhere in case of any urgency amid the lockdown situation.
If any person who is not a senior citizen but has extreme urgency and needs to travel to some place within the police unit's jurisdiction, he or she can also request for the service. Depending on the urgency, a car will be provided.
This apart, if senior citizens living alone want to have essential commodities such as food grains, vegetables and other objects of daily need delivered at their doorstep, police will help them using the 'Sahayak Jan' cars without any delivery charges.
The DC Traffic further informed that the cars have been given to police by a logistics company, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These cars are fitted with GPS and will be monitored from the control room.
On Tuesday, Sarkar informed that till now nearly 100 people have been provided with the service depending on their urgency, whereas medicines and other necessary goods were delivered to their homes.
Sources informed that most of the people who availed this service are from New Town
and Salt Lake area. According to a senior police official, several pregnant women were also provided with the cars in order to take them to hospital for check-up and return to their home.
On Monday, a woman identified as Sudita Mondal of Jagatpur in Baguati was taken to R G Kar Hospital for check-up and she returned after treatment.
