Bidhannagar Police implements major traffic changes to reduce congestion along VIP Road
Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police has planned some major changes in traffic to reduce congestion along VIP Road. Some of the plans have already been implemented.
Sources informed that a few months ago senior officials from Bidhannagar Police started planning to sought a way to ease the increasing pressure of traffic on VIP Road.
Since the last few months, people travelling from New Town to Madhyamgram had taken at least an hour to cover the stretch between Haldiram to Airport 3 number gate, which otherwise could be covered within half an hour.
Officials from Traffic department sat together and prepared several plans. As per the plan, a new exit gate will be constructed beside the existing airport 'arai' number gate, which will be used for Barasat-bound vehicular movement only. The existing gate will be used for VIP Road-bound vehicles. The vehicles coming from airport gate number 3 will be given free left turn.
Currently, both Barasat and VIP Road bound vehicles operate only through one gate. Due to this, the lane becomes one way for vehicles moving towards a particular direction.
After the new gate starts operating, VIP Road bound vehicles will continue moving even after the Nagerbazar bound signal turns red.
"We hope this will help us to reduce traffic congestion. Construction work of the new gate has already commenced. Some more steps will also be taken in this regard," said an official from the Bidhannagar Police. Sources informed that apart from creation of a new gate, the Barasat-bound flank of Jessore Road will be made wide between airport 2 number gate bus stop and airport 3 number gate. A new cut out will be made in airport 3 number gate area for smooth turning of Belgharia expressway bound vehicles which are coming from the Barasat direction.
Apart from these plans, the existing cut out at Haldiram has been shifted a few meters back towards Teghoria. Previously vehicles coming from Teghoria had to go to Kaikhali for taking a turn towards New Town. However, after starting vehicular movement using the new cut out, vehicles could easily turn towards the New Town bound road avoiding traffic congestion.
