Bharati's bodyguard escapes from detention
Kolkata: Sujit Mondal, bodyguard of former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, has managed to escape from Mumbai Police's detention on Friday night.
This happened when a team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reached Mumbai to get Sujit in its custody.
On Friday evening, the CID officers came to know that Mondal was threatening someone (Swapan) to lodge a false complaint against Chandan Majhi, against whose complaint the case was lodged. The phone call was made from LT Marg in Mumbai. The investigating officers also came to know that Mondal was threatening Swapan to lodge a false complaint against Majhi or else he would file a false case against him. The CID officers also came to know that Mondal went to LT Marg police station. Soon after, the CID officers urged Mumbai Police to detain him. Without wasting any time, a team comprising senior CID officers left for Mumbai.
The team reached Mumbai late on Friday night and were informed that Mondal had managed to escape at around 11.10 pm. The police initiated a search but they couldn't find him. Both Ghosh and her bodyguard Mondal were shown absconding by the CID when it submitted the charge-sheet in this connection before the Ghatal Court in West Midnapore on June 29. The CID officers were in search of both Ghosh and Mondal.
It may be recalled that CID had initiated a probe on the basis of a complaint lodged with Daspur police station against some police officers including the then Superintendent of Police of West Midnapore Bharati Ghosh. The allegation of extortion was raised against them.
The CID has already arrested six persons in this connection including the then Circle Inspector of Ghatal Subhankar Dey, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daspur police station Pradip Rath, former OC of Ghatal Chitta Pal and Assistant Sub-Inspector Debasish Das.
