Betting racket busted during Test match, 5 held

Kolkata: The Anti Rowdy Squad (ARS) of Detective Department, Kolkata Police has nabbed five persons on Saturday evening from Eden Gardens, for allegedly betting during the Test match.

According to police, due to the match between India and Bangladesh which ended on Sunday, ARS personnel were keeping strict vigil in and around Eden Gardens since Friday. On Saturday, ARS personnel who were posted at the gallery among the spectators, overheard something about betting. They subsequently came to know that a few people were betting somewhere in the Eden Gardens gallery.

After almost an hour of searching, police personnel at G1 Block saw three persons doing something and continuously working on their smartphones. As their activity was suspicious, police personnel started watching them closely.

After a few minutes police approached them and asked about their activity. Seeing them, one of the trio tried to flee but police personnel managed to detain him.

All three were brought out from the gallery and searched, during which police found 10 smartphones and four other gadgets which were being used for live betting. During interrogation they stated that two more persons in their racket were operating from a hotel in Sudder Street. Later, a police team went to the hotel and nabbed the two persons. From there, six more smartphones and a laptop along with Rs 1.4 lakh in cash were seized.
