Bengal's GST share touches Rs 1,630 cr for month of June
Kolkata: The robust economic strategy of the Mamata Banerjee government has ensured collection of Rs 1,630 crore State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) and Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) collection in the month of June when Bengal is the only state to fight against both COVID-19 and aftermath of Amphan simultaneously.
Despite the economy across the country nosediving due to the nationwide lockdown, the GST revenue collection from Bengal that include Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST), SGST, IGST and Cess stands at Rs 3,128 crore in the month of June. According to the sources in the
Finance department, the SGST out of it was Rs 1,100 crore while the IGST for imports from other states was Rs 530 crore.
"If we consider it together then the revenue generation for the state out of GST in the month of June was Rs 1,630 crore," said a senior official at Nabanna.
Usually, the state's share out of GST in a month during the non-Covid period used to remain around Rs 2,000 crore. It had dropped to around Rs 400 crore and Rs 1,100 crore in April and May respectively. But, the situation has improved much in June.
"Though it is comparatively lesser than the usual time, the revenue generation is quite good in terms of the present situation when the state needs to fight simultaneously against COVID-19 and aftermath of super cyclone Amphan," the official said adding that it has become possible just because of the robust economic policy of the present government with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee giving equal importance to both life and livehood while imposing lockdown in the state.
The official has also added that extension of deadline has also come up as a key factor behind increase in GST revenue collection in June compared to that of the past two months.
Though the GST collection from the state in June 2019 was Rs 3,514 crore compared to that Rs 3128 in the corresponding month in 2020, many other states including Haryana, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand witnessed a drop in GST collection by 24, 10, 15 and 27 percent respectively.
At the same time Excise revenue collection under different heads including "collection of duty", license fees, advance duty and bottling fees in the state was around Rs 104 crore in five days from July 7 to 12.
This comes crucial in terms of revenue generation through excise as it had dropped to Rs 350 crore a month in the past two months after its sale was allowed in post-Covid situation when the usual generation used to be Rs 950 crore a month at normal time.
