Bengal govt comes to the rescue of 55 labourers stuck in Tamil Nadu

Kolkata: The Bengal government has played a proactive role in ensuring supply of relief material in the form of ration to 55 odd daily wage earners from Bankura district, who have been stuck in Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, because of the lockdown in the country.

On being informed of the plight of the labourers, the District Magistrate of Bankura Arun Prasad through the intervention of senior officials of the state government took up the matter with their counterparts in Tamil Nadu and has already made provisions of food.

However, the labourers from the state have urged the Bengal government to come up with some measures so that they can return to their homes.

"We are facing a lot of problems as we are running out of money. The landlords are threatening us that we will be forced out of our lodging

facilities if we are unable to pay the monthly rent. We are receiving calls from our family members in the state and all of them are extremely worried," said Satyajit Nandi, one of the labourers. The labourers work at a t-shirt manufacturing company in Tamil Nadu and had reached the southern state soon after Kali Puja last year. "We get leave twice during the year- during Kali Puja and during April- May when we travel to our home state," said Pintu Bhadra, another labourer.

They have been staying in rooms where the rent is Rs 6,000 a month. Five to six labourers share each room.

"We have received no help from the administration in Tamil Nadu. We have spent whatever money we had in hand in procuring our daily food and we are in deep crisis now. We want the Bengal government to make arrangements for our return home," said Bhadra.
