B'deshi actor Abdun Gaji Noor takes part in poll drive, complaint lodged with EC
Kolkata: A complaint was lodged with the Election Commission against Bangladeshi actor Abdun Gaji Noor who courted controversy by taking part in an election rally on Wednesday.
The state BJP leaders have registered a complaint with the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) against the participation of the Bangladeshi actor in the election campaign. The Election Commission has taken an exception to the participation of a foreign national in the election campaign. It was learnt that the office of the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh took up the matter with the actor. He will be asked to return to his homeland.
It may be mentioned here that Bangladeshi actor Noor triggered controversy after he took part in an election rally in Dum Dum in favour of Sougata Roy, who is contesting the ongoing election from Dum Dum.
Noor was found standing in a hood-less jeep along with Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra on Wednesday. The incident sparked a political slugfest between the Trinamool Congress and BJP. The state BJP leaders termed the incident a gross violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) and demanded action against the TMC candidate Roy.
It was learnt from the sources in the CEO office that there is no specific laws laid down by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in this regard.
Hence the officials cannot take any action against a foreign national. They are however looking into the matter and may seek suggestion from the ECI.
The Bangladeshi actor however claimed that he took part in the road show after being requested by TMC leader Madan Mitra.
The actor also defended himself by saying that he took part in the road show without uttering a word.
Meanwhile, it may be said that in a similar incident Bangladeshi film actor Ferdous Ahmed also triggered controversy after he attended an election rallies in Raiganj constituency areas on April 14.
The actor was seen seeking votes for Trinamool Congress candidate Kanhaiyalal Agarwal at campaign rallies across Hemtabad and Karandighi near the Indo-Bangladesh border for ensuing Lok Sabha polls.
As the matter came to light, Ahmed was asked by the office of the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh to leave the country and go to Bangladesh immediately.
