Bazi Bazar back to Maidan after go-ahead from Army

Kolkata: The annual firecrackers fair is likely be shifted to its earlier venue at Maidan after the organisers received a go-ahead from the Army and the Kolkata Police.

The fair or Bazi Bazar may take place at the Maidan from October 22-27 after the organisers have received clearance from the concerned authority. Last year, the Burrabazar Fireworks Dealers' Association did not receive any clearance from the Army and hence, the venue had to be shifted from Maidan, which comes under the supervision of the Army.

The organisers later received a nod by the Kolkata Police and other agencies to hold the fair at Vivekananda Park in Southern Avenue. The other fair was held at Talla Park in the northern fringes of the city.

The firecrackers' fair started at Maidan in 1995 and was held there since then.

The organisers will hold meetings with the traders who usually put up their stalls at the fair. An elaborate plan would be scheduled and the security measures would be discussed in the meeting. Also, how many stalls to be allowed at the fair would also need to be decided.

The fair, exhibiting an array of firecrackers, is usually held prior to Kali Puja and Diwali. A large number of buyers come to the fair and collect various crackers.

All the stalls make a good business during this time of the year. According to rough estimate, each stall records a daily business of a few lakhs. It was learnt that in the previous years, traders had to face a loss after the venue was shifted from Maidan.
