Family members of Sekhar Dutta, a victim of gross medical negligence by a private nursing home, lodged a complaint with the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) urging it to take strict steps against the nursing home.
Dutta, a middle-aged man from Barasat in North 24 Parganas, might not be able to go back to normal life as he was allegedly administered a wrong drug by the nursing home authorities. The patient is currently undergoing treatment at the Barasat District Hospital with serious complications that have arisen due to the wrong treatment. He has developed serious infection in his leg.
He was admitted to Care and Cure Nursing Home in Barasat's Nabapally area few months ago with chest pain. Immediately after being taken to the nursing home, the victim was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There, he was wrongly administered a drug meant for those patients suffering from cardiac arrest by a doctor at the ICU.
The victim has alleged that Dr Gopal Ghosh, an MBBS doctor, administered him a drug that is given to a patient suffering from an heart attack on mere suspicion that he also might have suffered an attack. Immediately after the application of the drug, the patient's condition deteriorated as he started vomiting and also felt jolts in his body. When the nurses reported the matter to the accused doctor he did not even bother to attend to the patient.
The next day, Dutta was taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) by his family members. After being treated at the CMCH for the next few days, the patient returned home.
Dutta had to be admitted to Barasat District Hospital as he developed serious infection in his leg due to the wrong injection. The patient also developed various complications apart from the infection and is not able to control his urine.
After receiving the complaint of the victim, the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) instructed Care and Cure Nursing Home authorities to submit all documents related to the treatment of the patient to its office within 15 days.
