Barasat Court sentences 4 accused to 20 years of RI

Kolkata: The Barasat Court on Wednesday awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to four persons on charges of sexually assaulting a Nepali woman in May 2016. The court also ordered a compensation

of Rs 40 lakh to be paid by each of the four offenders to the victim.

The four persons - Arnab Bera, Subhendu Nag, Sourav Dey and Subrata Dutta, were convicted in connection with the offence on Monday. The woman was pulled inside a car and gang-raped multiple times by the accused in 2016. The investigation of the case was taken up on the basis of a complaint filed at the Electronic Complex police station in Salt Lake.

During the course of investigation, the sleuths had located the mobile tower location and arrested the four. During the Test Identification (TI) parade, the woman had successfully identified them, following which the police filed a chargesheet. During the trial, the details of mobile phone tower locations were exhibited as electronic evidence.

The incident dates back to May 29, 2016, when the woman had got down from a taxi near a bar at Salt Lake, Sector V. She had asked a local person about the location of a tea shop, when suddenly a white SUV had stopped beside her and three passengers from the car had pulled her inside.

After almost four hours of repeated gang-rape, the four had even talked about killing her as they feared getting caught, which the woman heard while she was lying almost unconscious. Hearing this, she had suddenly opened a door of the SUV and jumped on the road, on the wee hours of May 30.

While jumping from the car, a mobile phone which belonged to one of the accused persons also fell with her accidentally, while her own phone remained inside the vehicle.
