Balurghat conducts road safety drives

BALURGHAT: Keeping in mind chief minister Mamata Banerjee's slogan 'Safe Drive Save Life', Balurghat police conducted a related safety awareness programme to curb the menace of rash driving at Balurghat public bus stand on Monday afternoon.

Stickers of 'Safe Drive Save Life' and handbills consisting of 13 awareness measures were distributed to bus, taxi, matador-van and motorbike to avoid any untoward incident caused due to reckless driving. Around 50 vehicles along the same number of motorbikes were given the stickers and handbills directing them to obey traffic-rules

strictly.

Meanwhile, 'Safe Drive Save Life' programme started materialising in Kolkata in 2016. The programme has soon afterwards extended across the state covering all districts.

Officer-in-Charge (Traffic) Balurghat Utpal Chatterjee who attended the programme, said: "We are determined to implement the 'Safe Drive Save Life' programme successfully in South Dinajpur district. Frequent accidents occur due to rash driving. The drivers have to maintain the speed limit of their vehicles consciously to avoid accidents. Despite awareness, people are still unaware of the negative effect of reckless driving that causes even death too."

Assistant Sub-Inspector Samaresh Kumar Singha, who was also present in the programme said: "We have distributed stickers and handbills to the vehicles and motorbikes. We will not allow any bike rider without helmet while a single bike will only carry two persons."

Police said they will conduct similar awareness drives in future too.

According to a police source, 'Safe Drive Save Life' activity has minimised the number of accidents across the district.
