Balurghat bank heist bid: Two arrested

Police arrested two persons in connection with the robbery at Bangio Gramin Bikas Bank at Balurghat on Tuesday. It will be recalled that a gang had tried to loot the bank on Monday night. The robbers shot the civic volunteers who were there for the security of the bank.

Police learnt that the gang of at least 5-6 miscreants tried to break the window of the bank. They were strongly challenged by the civic volunteers there. Failing to thwart the attempts of the civic volunteers, the miscreants started firing at the security men. Later, the gang escaped from the spot as they could not enter inside the bank premises.

Police also learnt that the robbers shot at least 6-7 rounds of bullets. Later, the civic volunteers called up the police. A huge police force reached the spot and started the investigation. The officer of the bank unlocked the bank on Tuesday morning. The bank authority informed the police that nothing apparently was missing. But they need some time to check the entire banking system.

However, the district police ruled out that this area is prone to crime. Local residents, however, are concerned over their security. "This incident has shaken us up. We are now concerned about our security andhave requested the police to take quick action," said a local resident. However, the police acknowledged that the robbers tried to break the window grille and locks of the bank. The investigators also suspected that they might be a local gang. They had good knowledge about the area. The gang took a safe route to escape from the spot.

"We are investigating the case and checking all the previous records of such crimes which took place in this area. I think we can get some clue from those incidents," said a police source.

Meanwhile, policemen were posted in front of the bank to make the customers believe that they are safe.
