Auto drivers assault woman, family near South City Mall

Kolkata: A couple and an elderly person were allegedly harassed by some auto rickshaw drivers near South City Mall on Monday evening. Later, the woman lodged a complaint with the Lake police station but none could be arrested till Tuesday night.

According to sources, a woman from Parnasree along with her husband, two sons and her mother went to the South City Mall on Monday afternoon. Around 6:30 pm, they decided to go to Taratala from there. They approached the Jadavpur-Taratala auto-rickshaw stand to get transport to reach Taratala.

The woman alleged that auto drivers refused to ferry them to Taratala despite her repeated requests.

After getting refused by all the auto-drivers, the woman started taking pictures of the registration plates of the autos. Seeing her clicking pictures, several auto drivers abused her and passed filthy comments on her. When her husband protested, he was manhandled by the auto-drivers. When the woman tried to resist she was allegedly assaulted and molested.

All of them somehow managed to get out of the area by seeking police help. Later, the woman went to Lake police station and lodged a complaint against the auto-rickshaw drivers accusing them of assault and molestation.

"A case has been lodged. Probe is on to nab the accused persons," said Praveen Kumar Tripathi, Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) of Kolkata Police.
