Assam police trying to suppress murder of Bengali labourers, says Suvendu
Kolkata: State Transport minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday alleged that Assam police are deliberately trying to suppress the case in connection with the murder of two Bengal labourers.
Adhikari lashed out at the Assam police, saying that they are playing a 'got-up game' so that it does not become an issue here in the state. He also said that Assam police have "made a person lodge a complaint, the identity of whom is known to all."
Two youths, identified as Seikh Idris and Seikh Mohammad both of whom were originally residents of East Midnapore, were brutally murdered in Assam's Dumduma on February 9. Two of their colleagues were also injured when they tried to save the deceased. The victims were daily wage labourers who had gone to Assam a couple of years ago.
The family members of both the victims alleged that they were attacked only because they were Bengali. They used to work as labourers in the Tinsukia district of the state. Adhikari has met the family members of the victims and assured them of all necessary assistance. The motive behind the murder in both the cases is yet to be confirmed by the police. The two victims were found by the local residents with their throats slit near their workplace on Saturday.
They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where the duo had been declared brought dead. The victims used to stay in a rented house close to their workplace.
Some unidentified miscreants had attacked them when they were returning home from the factory on Saturday evening. Assam police have claimed that a quarrel with some local people over distribution of money might have led to the death of the duo.
They have started a detailed probe into the incident. They are also investigating to know if there is any other angle into the crime. The victims' family members have also lodged an FIR in the local police station. A sense of hatred has been created among the people in Assam after the announcement of NRC, which might have led to the incident, said Adhikari. The minister also stated that the assailants had attacked the victims after they were convinced about their identity.
