Aroop Biswas takes stock of construction work at Majerhat
Kolkata: State Public Works Department (PWD) minister Aroop Biswas on Friday visited the construction site of Majerhat Bridge to supervise construction work. Senior officials of his department were also present.
It may be mentioned that a Haryana-based company, SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd, has been awarded the contract to build the new bridge in place of the Majerhat Bridge that had caved-in on September 4, 2018. The new four-lane cable stayed bridge will be 355 metres in length.
The construction of the bridge had started in August this month and the state government is expected to throw it open by March or April 2020.
The project was delayed with the Eastern Railways taking a long time to give the nod after the general arrangement drawing (GAD) or the master plan was submitted by the PWD department.
The ER had also objected to the superstructure plan of the PWD and the nod was
also delayed, forcing the state government to revise the deadline for completion of the flyover.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been vocal against the Railways' delay in granting permission of the proposed bridge, on more than one occasion. The state had earlier planned to unveil the new bridge before Durga Puja this year.
