Arambag SDO celebrates Kanya Abagati Diwas

The Sub Divisional officer (SDO) of Arambag Dr Preeti Patel celebrated Kanya Abagati Diwas (girls awareness day) on the day of International Women's Day on March 8.

The SDO used the occasion to create awareness among adolescent girls regarding women empowerment, Education, Health and hygiene especially menstrual hygiene.

The program was convergence of Kanyashree, National Health Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission. Around 5,000 girls under Kanyashree scheme were targeted under this programme. Health teams visited schools in the blocks and spoke about menstrual hygiene and distributed sanitary napkins among girls for demonstration.

Sanitary napkins were bought from Self Help Groups. For the municipal areas, a huge programme was held at Rabindra Bhawan.

In that programme, the participation from private practitioners in spreading the awareness was encouraged. After the program, there was a question-answer session. Surprisingly, around 50 girls asked questions fearlessly without any hesitation.

"Menstruation is not a disease but a normal biological phenomenon. And it is perfectly alright to talk about menstruation and problems related to it," SDO Arambagh told the young girls.

SDO Arambagh who herself is a doctor, knows the importance of menstrual hygiene. She took that brave step to talk on this topic on Women's Day.
