App-based cab driver harasses female passenger, arrested from Tangra
Kolkata: An app-based cab driver allegedly tried to abduct a college student while she was travelling back home on Saturday afternoon.
The driver Keshav Prasad Singh has been arrested by the authorities of Tangra police station on the basis of a complaint lodged by the student. According to police sources, the complainant had booked a pool cab from Shyambazar area for her Tangra residence.
She had taken her seat beside the driver as two other passengers were sitting in the rear. The two fellow passengers got down before the cab reached Sealdah station.
"I had told the app-based cab driver to take a route through which I could reach home faster. However, the driver insisted that he would follow the route suggested by the navigation map. In this process, he took me on a circuitous route and started driving through deserted roads," said the student.
"I desperately tried to get off the cab but the lock of the gate would not open. I was sacred because his behavior indicated that he had some bad intentions. At last, with no option available, I banged his mobile phone on the front glass of the car near Baishali junction at Tangra after which he slowed down the cab," the student added.
This act drew attention of the locals. They helped to stop the cab and the victim was able to get out.
The victim had also called her mother and one of her close friends at the time of her ordeal but nobody answered up the phone. The driver was caught by the locals and was handed over to the police.
He was produced in Sealdah Court on Sunday and was remanded to police custody till July 5.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson of Uber said: "What's been described today (Sunday) is deeply upsetting. We are looking into the incident and will provide full support to the Law enforcement as and when required."
