Amdanga clash: Two TMC workers among three killed, over 20 injured
Kolkata: Three persons were killed and at least 20 injured in a clash at Amdanga in North 24-Parganas on Tuesday night.
Two of the deceased persons were supporters of Trinamool Congress while the other one was of CPI(M).
On Tuesday evening, locals said a group of armed goons, all of a sudden, started hurling bombs. It is also alleged that a group of people with heavy firearms entered the area.
TMC leaders alleged that in Taraberia, Bodai and Morich Panchayat seat, CPI(M) and independent candidates had joined hands to form the Panchayat board.
Fearing that some members might vote for Trinamool Congress, they forcefully tried to stop them from casting their votes. CPI(M) has denied the allegations and said Trinamool Congress is trying to stop them from forming the Panchayat board.
As time passed, situations became worse and the frequency of hurling bombs
went up.
Several people were injured as they tried to get to a safe place. Locals alleged that police failed to intervene at first as their officers were outnumbered.
Later, a big contingent of police along with RAF and tear gas units entered the villages and took charge of the area.
According to police sources, bombs, arms and ammunition were dumped at the villages previously aimed at creating restlessness in the area.
According to state Food and Supplies minister Jyotipriya Mallick, who is also the Trinamool Congress district president, the arms might have been smuggled
from Bangladesh.
But the police informed that no such information has been extracted in the investigation. On Wednesday, IGP South Bengal Niraj Kumar Singh said: "As far as we know, the bombs were locally made and the arms and ammunition might have come from Munger or similar areas. We are trying to know from where the goons had procured the arms and ammunition. We are conducting extensive investigation."
According to police sources, 10 persons have been arrested and 6 persons detained so far for further questioning.
