Ambulance collides with car on Howrah Bridge, patient escapes unhurt
Kolkata: An ambulance carrying a patient home collided head on with another private car on Howrah Bridge on Wednesday. Later, police arranged a trauma care ambulance and sent the
patient home.
According to police sources, on Wednesday morning a Kolkata-bound ambulance violated the central line on the road and collided head on with a Howrah-bound private car. As a result, the driver of the private car got minor injury on his head. He was sent to a hospital from where he was treated and discharged.
Meanwhile, the patient inside the ambulance somehow remained unhurt. Police came to know that the patient got discharged from a hospital in Howrah a few hours ago and was on his way home somewhere in North Kolkata.
As there was no emergency at that moment police decided to detain the ambulance.
Immediately on duty traffic sergeants got in touch with Howrah Bridge Traffic Guard and arranged for a trauma care ambulance of Kolkata Police (KP). Soon after the KP ambulance arrived, the patient was transferred and sent home.
Later, traffic police detained the ambulance driver along with his vehicle and handed him over to North Port police station where he was arrested on charges of endangering human life
and rash driving.
"We provide free and safe passage to each ambulance without confirming whether there is emergency or not. But ambulance drivers should also maintain traffic regulations for the sake of others and as well as the patient on board," said a police official.
