Kolkata: The state Correctional Administration department on Monday removed the superintendent and chief controlling officer of Alipore Central Correctional Home for dereliction of duty in the case of three Bangladeshi prisoners escaping from the home in the wee hours on Sunday.
"We have removed jail superintendent Soumik Sarkar and chief controlling officer Shibaji Rao on the basis of an enquiry report submitted by an officer of DIG rank," state Correctional Administration minister Ujjal Biswas said.
It has been learnt that Sarkar has been transferred to Medinipur Jail and DIG Biplab Das will be in charge of Alipore at present. Jayanta Chakraborty will be the new chief controlling officer of the home.
Sleuths investigating the incident have found out that most of the CCTVs that were installed between tower 5 and 6, which is the route that the trio had used for escape, were dysfunctional.
"The footage that we have got is of very poor quality and we are finding it difficult to trace the actual escape route," an officer said.
It may be mentioned that the Correctional Administration department had suspended three jail guards for dereliction of duty on Sunday itself and a departmental probe was ordered.
Officials from Alipore police station and the detective department of Kolkata Police along with sniffer dogs had visited the spot soon after the incident.
