The gherao and the protest movement by a section of students at University of Gour Banga was withdrawn on Sunday. According to a source, state Education minister Partha Chatterjee intervened in the matter and advised the university authority to hold a joint meeting with the protesting students. However, the solution came after the meeting and the Vice-Chancellor Gopal Chandra Mishra, who was gheraod for 46 hours, from Friday to Sunday, was freed by the students.
Local MLA Nihar Ranjan Ghosh, Trinamool Congress Malda District President, Moazzem Hossain were seen in the meeting, where protesting students discussed the problem with the Vice Chancellor and the teachers. Some students raised the question about the intervention of political leaders in the meeting. However, the meeting was fruitful in the end.
It may be mentioned that the agitating students of University of Gour Banga had continued their gherao and protest movement on Saturday.
Around 245 students took part in the agitation programme to protest against the marks distribution system in their examination copies. They demanded the increase of 15 marks in each examination copy. The allegation of the protesting students was that the examiners gave them average marks. Marks varied from 18 to 20 for most of the students.
However, state Education minister Partha Chatterjee had cleared on Saturday that no such demand made by the protesting students would be fulfilled. But he had advised the university authority to convince the students in a peaceful way. He instructed the university to hold meeting with the protesting students.
In the meeting, the protesting students alleged, that the Controller of Examinations, Sanatan Das is a corrupt person and demanded his resignation. The Vice Chancellor asked the students to submit a written complaint against Controller of Examinations. He also said that the examination copies will be rechecked. According to police, the trouble began on January 25 after results of the second were published.
