8-yr-old dies of medical negligence at NRS

Kolkata: A chaos broke out at the NRS Medical College and Hospital on late Friday night following the death of an eight-year-old girl whose family members have brought charges of negligence against the hospital authorities. The patient was a student of class I.

The family members of the deceased lodged a complaint with the local police station on the basis of which a probe has been initiated. Police said the victim, Sneha Sarkar (8), was taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital on Friday morning after she complained of some complications. The victim's father, Narayan Sarkar, a resident of Beliaghata, said there were swellings in various parts of her body and hence she was rushed to the hospital. The patient was immediately admitted.

Sarkar alleged that the patient remained unattended at the ward for a long time. As her health condition deteriorated in the evening, the family members urged the doctors and nurses of the hospital to attend to her. No initiative was, however, taken in this regard, alleged Biswas.

The victim later developed respiratory distress in the evening. The family members again requested the nursing staff members to provide the patient with oxygen support. But no action was taken. The victim's family members arranged an oxygen cylinder and put the patient on oxygen support with the help of some employees. It was alleged that a nursing staff member removed the oxygen cylinder and hence the patient died.

Following this incident, the deceased family members staged agitation inside the hospital campus resulting in tension among other patients.

Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. The family members registered a complaint of medical negligence by the doctors. They also demanded stringent punishment for those who were responsible for the death of the patient.

In a separate incident, family members of a 3-year-old baby ransacked a portion of a private hospital in Asansol after the baby was allegedly not properly treated by the hospital.

The incident sparked tension among the locals. The situation was brought under control by the police.
