700 women donate blood at Sonarpur camp
KOLKATA: Seven hundred women donated blood at a camp organised by Sonarpur South Legislative Assembly Trinamool Women Congress on Sunday.
The camp was held at Sonarpur Sishu Niketan School. It was organised after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee instructed party workers to organise voluntary blood donation camps to tide over the blood crisis faced by various banks.
Biman Bandopadhyay, Speaker West Bengal Legislative Assembly and Subhasish Chakraborty, party's MP were present at the function.
"We want to address the public through this camp. It is an awareness programme from our end. There are misconceptions associated with blood donation throughout the country. When someone donates blood, one does not face weakness in the body or other health issues. I would like everyone to overcome these misconceptions and at the same time, inspire others regarding the same. This is a motivational cause, especially when it is an all-women initiative. We hope to continue hosting similar health camps in the years to come," said Jiban Mukhopadhyay, MLA.
The main purpose of organising this event was to fight the scarcity of blood at times of emergency. 'Give Blood, Save Life' is the theme of the initiative. It highlights the fact that a blood donation is an act towards the welfare of mankind by mankind.
