7 persons injured, woman's right arm severed after matador collision

Seven persons were injured including a woman whose right arm got severed from her elbow and another had his finger cut off when the matador they were travelling while returning home from the crematorium was hit by another speeding vehicle coming from the opposite direction on Sunday early morning.
The incident took place at around 5 am near Ahiritola More on Aurobinda Sarani. After the locals heard a loud noise, they rushed to rescue the victims and took all the injured passengers to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Three of the injured were later shifted to another hospital. The driver of the matador that was carrying the passengers also received injuries in the incident.
The locals said the victims were returning to Baguati from Nimtala crematorium in a matador. The other matador coming from Ultandanga was at a top speed when its driver lost control and it hit the other vehicle carrying the victims. The accused driver was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident. The locals managed to catch hold of the accused driver and he was later handed over to the police.
The cops reached the spot and seized the vehicle. The family members of the injured alleged that the patients were not getting appropriate treatment at the hospital and it was delayed. The locals added that there were many women in the matador including Tapati Roy who lost her right arm due to reckless driving of the vehicle. They also alleged that vehicles ply at top speed through the area regularly in the wee hours as a result of which there are always possibilities of fatal accidents. The police have failed to the check reckless driving of vehicles in the area.
"We rushed to the spot after being attracted by a loud thud and found seven injured persons including two women whose condition was critical. The errant vehicle brushed past the other matador after hitting it. There were blood stains all over the road.
The locals alleged that despite the "Safe Drive Save Life" campaigned initiated by the state government, the police have failed to crack down on the vehicles that often openly flout traffic norms resulting in accidents. They also demanded speed breakers on Aurobindo Sarani where the drivers speed up their vehicles especially at the wee hours.
