Seven persons including five policemen were injured when a police jeep collided head on with a pick up van at Golkata area under Matha Bhanga sub-division on Tuesday morning. The local people rushed the injured victims to the Mathabhanga sub-divisional hospital wherefrom some injured persons were referred to the Cooch Behar MJN Hospital as their condition deteriorated while some others were let off after primary treatment. Police said that the pickup van was carrying cattle to Mathabhanga from Jamaldaha when the driver lost control over the vehicles and hit the police van coming from the opposite direction.
Following the incident, the local residents staged a demonstration demanding a check post on the Mathabhanga-Siliguri state highway as the vehicles often ply through the area flouting traffic norms. Senior police officers of the district reached the spot and brought the situation under control. The demonstration was lifted after the senior police officers assured them that they were considering their request with utmost sincerity. The driver of the pickup van fled from the spot along with the vehicle immediately after the accident. Police have finally managed to arrest the accused driver after carrying out a raid.
