6-yr-old suffers injury on face after being hit by stone on moving train

Kolkata: A six-year-old girl from Ashokenagar in North 24-Parganas suffered injuries on her face after she was attacked with a stone while travelling on a train on Sunday night. Passengers in the Sealdah-Bongaon section raised questions over the security of commuters.

The incident took place between Bamangachi and Duttapukur railway stations. The victim, Adrija Majumdar, was sitting by the side of the window. She had boarded the Bongaon local with her parents. After the train left Bamangachi station, a stone was flung at the train which hit Adrija's face. The girl suffered serious injuries on her face. The bleeding did not stop and her parents had to get down at Ashokenagar station and go to the Habra state general hospital with some passengers.

Railway police officers started a probe into the incident. The police suspect that some local miscreants in an inebriated state pelted stones at the running train. They are trying to find out if such incidents took place in the Sealdah-Bongaon section in the recent past.

It is alleged that areas near railway tracks are often frequented by local miscreants late in the evening but no major steps have been taken. Many commuters have expressed their concern. The railway police have started a probe but made no arrest so far. "We regularly travel by trains. If such incidents happen it would be difficult for us to sit by the window. The Railway police must nail down the culprits," said Kuntal Chakraborty, a resident of Haththuba in Habra.
