45-year-old killed in head-on truck collision
Kolkata: A 45-year-old man was killed when two trucks collided head-on near the Gojar More area under Haripal police station in Hooghly on Sunday morning.
According to the district police, the victim has been identified as Tapan Malik (45). Locals had staged a protest demonstration on National Highway 26 on Sunday causing traffic congestion in the area.
Police said Malik was walking on the street at around 5 am on Sunday when one of the trucks hit him. The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced him brought dead and the family members were informed.
According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that misty weather might have led to the accident. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be confirmed.
The drivers of the trucks fled the spot after the incident. Locals protested against the reckless driving.
The demonstration was lifted nearly after 45 minutes with intervention from senior district police officers.
Police pacified the mob and brought the situation under control and vehicular movement resumed after the damaged trucks were removed.
The senior police officers assured locals that surveillance would be conducted on a regular basis. They have started a detailed probe into the incident and conducting raids to nab the absconding truck drivers. The investigating officers are also examining if the vehicles had developed any technical glitch at the time of the accident.
