4 arrested for robbing man posing as shuttle passengers in New Town

Kolkata: Four youths have been arrested by New Town Police Station for allegedly robbing a person after throwing chilli powder at him on Tuesday night. Police informed that the accused persons posed as shuttle passengers.

According to the sources, Sumit Ghosal, a resident of DC block in New Town was waiting in front of Technopolis to avail transport on his way home on October 9. On seeing Ghosal waving for a shuttle taxi around 10 pm, a sedan stopped. Ghosal informed police that the driver readily agreed to drop him at his destination and was the last person to board the car as three persons were already in there.

While on the way, all of a sudden the other three grabbed Ghosal and demanded his belongings, along with threatening him with dire consequences. When Ghosal showed a little resistance, one of the accused threw chilli powder in his eyes and the other two robbed him. Later, he was pushed out of the car near Narkelbagan crossing.

Ghosal somehow managed to reach home. He lodged a complaint with New Town Police Station against four unknown miscreants on October 14. After initiating a probe, police went through the CCTV footage of the stretch where Ghosal was robbed. The sleuths were able to identify some of the accused persons from the footages.

On Tuesday night, police arrested four persons identified as Anil Halder, Debashis Dey, Rupak Dey and Partha Dey. According to the sources, they would be taken in to custody to recover Ghosal's stolen items. They will also check if any of them had any criminal record in the past.
