'320% more assets than known sources of income'

Kolkata: A disproportionate assets case has been registered against former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh on Friday after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) revealed that there was 320 percent more assets creation than the income from known sources.

The CID officers have compared the income of the former IPS officer for the period between January 2012 and January 2018, when she resigned.

The investigating officers have made a calculation of the total worth of the assets including buildings, plots, gold and cash. Subsequently, it was compared with her income from the known sources and it was found that value of the assets is 320 percent more than it should have been as per her known sources of income, said a senior CID officer.

The disproportionate assets case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered on the basis of a complaint of a CID officer, said Nishat Pervez, DIG, CID (Operations). It may be recalled that the CID had initiated a probe in connection with a case in which charges of extortion were raised against Ghosh and some of her subordinate officers.

A trader, Chandan Majhi, had lodged a complaint with Daspur police station on January 2 this year alleging extortion bid. Subsequently, the investigating officers from the CID conducted raids in the houses and residential quarters of Ghosh and her subordinate police officers, who are allegedly involved in it. During the raids in the houses of Ghosh, her husband MAV Raju and some of her "close officers", the investigating officers had seized huge cash, gold and several incriminating documents. Raju was arrested on August 7 after the Calcutta High Court had rejected his plea for anticipatory bail. Raids were also conducted at his residence on August 14 when the investigating officers seized six pen drives and one hard disc and have gone through them.
