Around 300 women staying in New Town will take part in the first ever All Women Marathon on March 11 to create awareness on women empowerment as a part of the International Women's Day programme. International Women's Day will be observed on March 8.
The New Town Business Club of New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) will organise the marathon.
The participants will congregate at Business Club and the marathon will start at 7 am. It will be a 5 km marathon. NKDA officials have chalked out the route map. It will not be a competitive marathon and participation will be the most important thing.
After the participants come back to the originating point, they will be given light refreshment and prizes in the form of two tickets which will enable them to enjoy free rides at Eco Park or watch a movie at Nazrul Tirtha or visit to the Mother's Wax Museum. This will also help Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) to highlight its various projects to the residents of New Town.
The news of the All Women Marathon has created great enthusiasm among the young girls and women in New Town. This is for the first time when an all women marathon will be held in the state. The members of various ladies clubs had suggested NKDA to hold such a programme.
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has introduced Kanyasathi scheme for girls and distributing cycles under Sabuj Sathi which has helped girl students in the rural areas to carry on with their education.
