30 injured as two buses collide on NH-512
Balurghat: Around 30 people travelling in two state government buses were injured when both vehicles collided head on at South Dinajpur's Rampur on National Highway 512 on Sunday morning.
Police reached the spot after being intimated by the locals and sent the injured passengers to Gangarampur subdivisional hospital.
They have been undergoing treatment till the last report came in. According to a hospital source, the conditions of at least five of the injured, including two women remained grim.
Police said one NBSTC bus going to Siliguri from Balurghat depot collided head on with another NBSTC bus coming from the opposite direction and 30 people sustained injuries.
Immediately after the accident, locals started rescue operation and informed the police as well.
Police later sent the injured passengers to hospital.
There was huge traffic congestion following the accident.
Normalcy, however, was restored after police seized both vehicles from the spot.
According to the eye witnesses, the accident was the bus driver's fault coming towards Balurghat as he took the vehicle in the wrong direction on the highway while trying to overtake another bus.
Both the drivers also received injuries. Police have started a probe. Locals alleged the accident was the cause of reckless driving.
