3 of family killed in accident, one battling for life

In a tragic incident three members of a family were killed in a road accident which took place at Raiganj in North Dinajpur on Wednesday.

The victims have been identified as Sunil Roy, his wife Seuli Roy and their son Sujay Roy. They were all residents of Subhasnagar area falling under the jurisdiction of Chopra police station.

The other son of the couple, Sumit received critical injuries in the incident. Police said that the accident took place when the family was crossing road at Adalgach area. A speeding truck lost control and hit them. Another person has received injuries in the incident and is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The accused driver of the truck fled the spot along the vehicle immediately after the accident.

Police said Roy went to one of his relative's house along with his wife and two sons on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday morning they were returning home at Chopra in a bus. After getting down from the bus at Adalgacha, the family members were trying to cross National Highway 31.

A Malda bound speeding truck was approaching fast. The driver of the vehicle could not control the truck and eventually hit the family.

The incident caused a traffic jam in the area leading to inconveniences for commuters. Police later brought the situation under control and normalcy was restored.

The local residents rushed to the spot and took all the injured victims to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced three of them brought dead while Sumit is undergoing treatment with serious injuries all over his body.

Police have started a raid to nab the absconding driver. The local residents told the police that the vehicle was running at top speed when the accident took place. Police have started a detailed probe in this regard. They were also trying to ascertain if the truck driver was in an inebriated state.

In a separate incident, three persons including two zilla parishad members from East Midnapore were injured while returning home after attending the Chief Minister's rally at Digha.

The accident took place near Najir Bazar area under Bhupatinagar area on Digha-Mecheda state highway. The car they were travelling in had hit a roadside tree while trying to overtake a truck.

The driver of the car was also injured in the incident. All the injured persons were taken to Tomluk District Hospital by the police.
