3 killed including 3-year-old girl in two separate accidents

Kolkata: Three persons including a class four student were killed in two separate accidents in the districts.

An eight-year-old girl from Hooghly's Chandannagar was killed in a tragic road accident on Delhi Road on Wednesday morning prompting locals to stage a protest demonstration.

The incident sparked off tension in the area. The victim, Panmoni Soren was a class IV student. She was trying to cross the road when a speeding truck hit her. She was going to a local shop to buy an exercise book at around 8 am.

Police said when the victim was crossing the road a Howrah-bound vehicle hit her. The victim died on the spot. The truck driver fled the spot with his vehicle immediately after the incident.

Locals put up a road block following the incident and demanded immediate repair of CCTVs in the area.

All the CCTVs have been lying defunct. They also alleged that although civic volunteers remain stationed in the area, the vehicles often play through the area flouting traffic norms.Traffic movement got disrupted following

the road block.

Locals demanded that the police officers of the district must give them assurance about surveillance being conducted properly in near future in writing. They also threatened to conduct a bigger movement if the situation does

not improve.

Locals also said the accused driver could have been easily arrested if the CCTVs in the area were functional. The road block was later lifted after senior police officers assured that their demands would be met. The victim's body was later sent for an autopsy. Raids are being conducted to nab

the driver.

In a separate incident, two youths were killed after a bike they were riding skidded in the Sahapur area of Malda on Tuesday night. They have been identified as Suman Singh (26) and Suman Das (20). Both of them were residents of English Bazar area of the same district.
