2nd foot overbridge at Santragachi Stn unveiled
Kolkata: South Eastern Railway (SER) recently unveiled the second foot overbridge at Santragachi railway station. The foot overbridge is 160 metres in length and 12 metres in width. The SER decided to construct the second foot over bridge after two persons were killed and 17 injured in a stampede on a foot overbridge at the Santragachi railway station in Howrah district on October 22, 2018.
The incident took place after passengers of three express trains and local trains tried to exit the station at the same time through the old foot overbridge at Santragachi railway station.
"There was no formal inauguration. It was opened on October 3," said Sanjay Ghosh, chief public relation officer of SER.
While, the construction of second foot over bridge was executed by Indian Railway Construction Company Limited (IRCON), sophisticated machinery tools and other equipments were also brought from Bridge and Roof Company Limited for the installation of girder.
SER ran special night-long services for the pandal-hoppers during Durga Puja this year. Security was beefed up to ensure the safety of passengers.
This apart, SER had decided to run 13 pairs of special trains between Santragachi and Puducherry from October 5 to December 30.
