20 packets of carcass meat found

Kolkata: There was tension after 20 packets of carcass meat were recovered from Koikhali off VIP Road on Thursday morning.

Locals saw those packets lying near a bush and informed the police. Police seized those packets and said because of regular raids by the civic bodies at hotels and restaurants, some restaurant owner must have thrown them to save arrest and subsequent harassment. The seized item will be sent for analysis. Locals said in the past few years, hundreds of road side hotels and inns have cropped up that are selling non-veg food items particularly Biriyani at a very low price. This raised suspicion of the locals who lodged complaints with the police.

It may be mentioned that out of the 33 samples collected by Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation from Salt Lake, Rajarhat and Baguiati, reports of 13 samples have arrived and of these, 8 samples are found to be infested with bacteria. The civic bodies and police will intensify raids at hotels, restaurants, food chains and road side restaurants as it has received reports that carcass meat are being mixed with fresh meat to prepare non-veg items.
