2-year-old found dead in canal

Kolkata: Tension was triggered among the residents of Kattala area under the leather complex police station after a 2-year-old boy was found in a canal.

The victim has been identified as Aranya Mondal (2), who had been missing since Saturday morning. The area, where the body was traced on Sunday morning, is around one km away from his residence.

Locals spotted the victim floating in a canal nearby and reported the matter to the local police. Police later recovered the body and sent it for the post-mortem examination. The family members of the victim were called for the identification of the baby.

Police came to know from the family members that the boy went to play in front of his house on Saturday morning. Later, he was spotted on the back side of the house which is close to the canal. He then went missing. The family members and the locals to search in various places but failed to get any trace. The family members on Saturday night lodged a missing dairy with the local police station. Police have started a probe to ascertain whether the victim fell into the canal accidentally or there was any foul play behind the incident.

According to police, there was no injury marks in the body of the victim. However, there were blood stains in his nose. Police are looking into all possible angles of the incident. The investigators are also trying to know if someone was accompanying the baby when he was playing in the courtyard on Saturday.
