2 killed, 1 injured after being hit by racing buses

Kolkata: Two youth, who were riding pillion on a scooter, have been killed after being crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus, which was in a mad race with another to pick up extra passengers.

The incident took place at Telengabagan on Monday evening. The victims fell on the road while the scooter got caught between two buses that were racing with each other.

According to police, three friends were on the scooter when the accident took place. As the pillion riders fell on the road, a running bus of 215/A route smashed them while the other youth who was riding the scooter received serious injuries. The deceased were the residents of Daspara area of Muchibazar.

The incident triggered tension in the area. Locals staged a protest at the place of the incident alleging that racing between two buses remains unchecked leading

to accidents.

Traffic jam was created in the area after the incident.

The situation was later brought under control through the intervention of the senior police officers. Locals rushed the injured victims to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where the doctors pronounced the two pillion riders brought dead.

The other friend has been undergoing treatment in the hospital. The eyewitnesses told the police that two buses of the same route were headed towards Khanna from Ultadanga side when the scooter came between the two. None of youth were wearing helmet at the time of the accident.

Locals told the police that the buses were racing one against another to pick up extra passengers. Both the drivers of the vehicles and the conductors fled the spot immediately after the incident. Police have seized the vehicles. Raids are being conducted to nab the bus drivers.
