2 drug peddlers held, brown sugar worth lakhs seized

Kolkata: The narcotics cell of Kolkata Police busted a drug racket and nabbed two drug peddlers from Royd Street on Tuesday night and seized brown sugar worth several lakhs. According to sources, on Tuesday afternoon, cops got a tip-off that a drug peddler has been seen in the Park Street area. In the evening, a source informed that there could be a drug deal on Tuesday night. Based on the information, cops from narcotics cell were sent in Park Street area to keep tabs on around the area.

Around 11:55 pm, cops identified the suspect in front of 8A, Royd Street in Park Street area. While the suspect identified as Shaikh Latifuddin of Alimuddin Street was busy selling narcotics to a person, cops surrounded

them.

Later, it was found that the second person identified as Shaikh Raja is a drug peddler who was receiving some amount of narcotics in

order to sell them to his customers. During search, cops found 255 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 2 lakh from Latifuddin's possession and 20 grams worth Rs 15,000 from Raja. Immediately they were arrested and brought to narcotics cell. During interrogation sleuths came to know that the duo used to sell narcotics and drugs to college students. They used to receive order over phone call. To supply the order accused persons used to call the customers to place of their choices which were safe.

It is suspected that the racket is spread in a wide area with several more drug peddlers connected. Cops are trying to locate who else are behind the racket. Earlier, this month narcotics cell had arrested eight persons, including five college students with heroin. After interrogating the college students cops managed to get hold of three drug peddlers identified as Aman Gupta, Ashim Hait and Pritam Patra.

They had also stated that college students were their primary buyers of drugs and narcotics.

This apart, cops started keeping a vigil after they were tipped off about a possible deal in drugs around on Dr. Sundari Mohan Avenue. On Tuesday, Md. Kabir (28) was arrested for illegal possession of more than 45.450 grams heroine in numerous paper sachets.
