2 arrested in connection with Narendrapur firecracker blast

Kolkata: Two persons have been arrested by Narendrapur police station in connection with the incident of firecracker explosion during a display of the same at Kandarpapur in Narendrapur.

According to sources, the fireworks display was organised by a local club for the first time. However, no permission was obtained from the police and the fire brigade before organising such an event. The sleuths also came to know that no precautionary measures were taken before commencing the fireworks display. It was also alleged that the firecrackers were stored close to a place where the club members were bursting the crackers.

After the incident, police initiated a case and arrested two persons who are the portfolio holders of the club that had organised the fireworks display. They were booked on charges of negligence, attempt to commit culpable homicide and others. They have been remanded to 7-day police custody on Monday after being produced before the Alipore Court.

At least 12 persons were injured after a pile of firecrackers exploded during the programme at Kandarpapur in Narendrapur on Sunday evening. At around 8:30 pm, a fireworks display was arranged. For the purpose, a huge quantity of firecrackers was brought in. All of a sudden, a spark from the crackers fell on the pile and a huge explosion took place. There was panic among the onlookers and several people, in order to save themselves, jumped in a nearby swamp.
