19-year-old student commits suicide after mother's death

Kolkata: Uttara Chowdhury (19), a college student from the city, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her house after failing to bear the shock of her mother being declared brain dead.

The incident took place on Friday night after her mother, who was admitted to a private hospital in Central Kolkata with kidney-related ailments on Thursday, was declared brain dead on Friday night.

The girl's father died in 2014. As she came to know that her mother was declared brain dead by the doctors and there was no possibility for her to recover, the girl took this drastic step.

On Friday night, she told her cousin sisters that she was going to her room and would join them in a few minutes. As the victim did not return, one of her cousin sisters went to her room and found that the door was locked from inside. As she did not open the door, despite repeated knocks, the relatives reported the matter to the police.

Police reached the spot and broke open the door to find the victim hanging from the ceiling fan.

She was immediately taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital where the doctors pronounced her brought dead.

A resident of Tiljala, the victim was a student of BCom first year at Heramba Chandra College. Her father also died of kidney-related problems in 2014. The girl's mother donated one of her kidneys to her husband but efforts went in vain. Her mother Juli Chowdhury had been suffering since she donated her kidney. Following some kidney-related ailments, she was taken to a private nursing home in the city and announced brain dead on Friday evening.

The victim girl could not bear the shock that she had gone through. She went into her room and committed suicide. According to a preliminary investigation, police have found this to be a case of suicide. No suicide note was, however, recovered from her room. Police suspect that she might have committed suicide out of fear of being alone after losing her mother.
