16 Jaipuria students barred from sitting for CU semester

Kolkata: The situation at Seth Anandaram Jaipuria College took a dramatic turn, with principal of the college Ashok Mukhopadhyay requesting Calcutta University not to allow 16 of its students with less than 60 per cent attendance to sit for their B.Com semester test.

The college had earlier allowed them to fill in the university's forms for appearing in the tests. It has been learnt that the principal of the college, on Saturday evening, had written to the university in this regard, stating that they are revoking their earlier decision of allowing the 16 students to sit for the examination.
The earlier decision of allowing these students with low attendance to appear for examinations had invited criticism from a section of teachers of the college.
It may be mentioned that out of the 655 B.Com students of the morning, day and evening sections, 134 have less than 60 per cent attendance.
CU vice-chancellor (academic) Dipak Kar had made it clear on Saturday morning that the university would bar students with less than 60 per cent attendance from sitting for the B.Com semester test.
The 16 students who were allowed to fill in the forms have attendance between 50 and 59 per cent. Four teachers of the college had said that they will step down to protest against the decision of allowing the 16 students to fill in the forms. They were requested to rejoin on Sunday.
Jaipuria College authorities had allowed the students to fill in the forms last month after students demanded that they be allowed to take the test.
