150th birth anniversary of Sister Nivedita: CM tweets tribute

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid a tribute to Sister Nivedita in a tweet on her birth anniversary.

Banerjee tweeted: "Remembering educationist and social activist Sister Nivedita on her birth anniversary."

It may be mentioned that the state government has taken up initiative to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Sister Nivedita. It was also decided to give bravery awards to girls in her name.

Nivedita, who took up teaching students at the age of 18, had her own school at Wimbledon where pre-school method of imparting education had attracted Swami Vivekananda, who later invited her to come to Kolkata to set up a school.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited Wimbledon and installed a Blue Plaque on the building that used to house the school. Interest to know about Nivedita's life and work is fast growing in the West. In Dungannon, statue of Nivedita has been kept in the library. The British government has given permission to install a statue in the graveyard where her ashes were buried. In Wimbledon, statue of Sister Nivedita and Swami Vivekananda on the biggest urban park has been proposed.

Nivedita translated Rabindranath's Kabuliwala into English and she was the main instrument behind Jagadish Chandra Bose's scientific work.

She breathed her last at Roy Villa in Darjeeling on October 13 in 1911 at the age of 44. The Roy Villa has been restored and thousands of people visit the place during their visit to Darjeeling. Her statue has been garlanded on Sunday morning by the members of Nivedita Brati Sangha.

Chief Minister had acquired the building where Nivedita had opened her school at 16A Bose Para Lane and handed it over to Ramakrishna Sarada Mission.
