11 high volume low speed fans installed at Howrah Station

Kolkata: For better comfort of passengers, Eastern Railway has installed 11 giant size state-of-the-art High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans at Howrah Station at a cost of Rs 47 lakh.

Among these, seven are installed at the old complex of Howrah Station and four HVLS fans are installed at the new complex. These HVLS fans are strategically engineered to cover a large area effectively that cannot be achieved by multiple small high-speed fans or other conventional fans.

The HVLS fans can also be used in winter by reversing the operating sequence, pulling hot air down from the ceiling to the floor. These fans at the station also reduced the noise generated by multiple high-speed fans and are cost effective as they reduce energy consumption. Each of the giant size HVLS fan at the station has a sweep of 7.3 m and can effectively cover an area of 1579 sq m (17,000 sqft). The HVLS fans also helped in reducing electricity consumption by replacing 99 conventional air circulating fans and 12 ceiling fans at Howrah Station area, resulting in a saving of 67145 KWh electric energy per year — a step forward towards energy conservation.
