10-year-old boy dies of unknown fever at private hospital, dengue suspected
Kolkata: A 10-year-old boy from Salt Lake died of fever at a private hospital on EM Bypass on Thursday night. The state Health department is yet to confirm if it was a case of dengue.
Though the hospital authorities have stated that the patient had died of dengue. It was learnt that the patient, Narayan Shrestha (10), was admitted to hospital on late Wednesday evening due to high fever.
The family members of the patient told doctors that the victim had been suffering from fever for the past one week.
It was learnt that the family members decided to admit the patient to a nearby nursing home after he suffered from high fever.
The nursing home authorities denied admission to the patient. He was later shifted to a private hospital on EM Bypass.
A resident of Duttabad Road, Shrestha, was admitted to the pediatric department of the hospital under Dr Parthasarathi Bhattacharya. He was a student of class IV from a school in Salt Lake.
The doctors at the hospital conducted blood tests on the patient and confirmed dengue. According to the hospital, the victim's platelet was going down at a rapid pace that complicated the situation further.
According to the hospital sources, the patient's condition turned critical on Thursday evening and later died at the hospital at around 11.30 pm.
The death certificate issued by the private hospital authorities said the boy tested positive with NS 1 and dengue was the cause of his death.
According to the hospital, the other associated causes of his death are Hemophagocytic Lynphohistiocytosis (HLH).
It is a rare but potentially fatal disease commonly found in infants.
The disease can also appear among the patients of all ages, doctors said.
