1 killed, 2 injured after being hit at Bhupen Bose Avenue

Kolkata: One was killed and two injured after a Heavy Goods Vehicle hit them on Wednesday night at Bhupen Bose Avenue. According to locals, a dog had chased the three of them and they ran to save themselves, the speeding vehicle hit them and fled.

Sources informed that the deceased, Uttam Das (40), and the injured — Bapi Dolui and Biswanath Ghosh — were returning from work. They used to work for a catering service. After the work was over, they were walking on a footpath at Bhupen Bose Avenue to reach respective homes in North Kolkata. Near an HDFC bank branch at Bhupen Bose Avenue, a dog was sleeping. On hearing them talk, the dog woke up and started barking.

They stopped their movement as they found the dog barking at them. The dog tried to chase them as they started walking backwards. Meanwhile, a few more dogs joined the barking dog and started chasing the trio. As a result, the trio got scared and started running aimlessly to save themselves. All of them came on to the road and a speeding vehicle came from behind, hit them and fled. On hearing screams of the men, some occupants of the roadside shops ran to their rescue and rushed the three to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared Das brought dead.

Dolui is still admitted to the same hospital with serious injuries on his right leg and kept under observation. Ghosh, who sustained injuries on his waist, was treated and discharged by the doctors. According to hospital sources, Das died due to serious head injuries.

Police are trying to identify the offending vehicle by checking CCTV footages. A case has been initiated in this regard with Shyampukur police station.
