1 killed, 15 injured in two separate bus mishaps

Kolkata: A scooter rider was ran over by a bus on Tuesday evening at Dum Dum Park on VIP Road. He was immediately rushed to a nursing home in Lake Town where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police informed that at around 7:30 pm, Indrajit Das (35) a resident of Chndrapally in New Barrackpore, was going his scooter towards Keshtopur. He was waiting for a green signal at the Dum Dum Park crossing. A bus

was waiting on his left side. Later, another bus came and stopped on his right side.

As the signal turned green, the bus of route 46B hit the scooter. As a result, Basu fell on the road. But the driver of the bus ran him over without bothering to halt. Seeing Basu getting ran over, police personnel at Dum Dum Park somehow managed to stop the bus, but could not detain the driver as he jumped from the vehicle and ran away.

Following the incident, Lake Town police station was informed. Later, police seized the bus. A case has

been registered against the offending driver.

In another incident, 15 persons were injured after a passenger bus toppled while competing with another bus moving in the same direction. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Ghurnir Mor area in Berhampore.

Passengers told the police that both the buses were racing to beat each other to their destination. Near Ghurnir Mor on the Berhampore-Jalangi State Highway, the second bus driver tried to overtake his competitor.

While blocking the first bus, the driver lost control over the steering and the vehicle toppled. Police, with help from the locals, recovered the injured passengers and admitted them to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. The driver and other staff of the bus have fled and the vehicle has been seized.
