A middle-aged person died in a road accident at South 24 Parganas' Narendrapur after two motorbikes collided with a speeding auto-rickshaw on Wednesday. The man was taken to a hospital but was declared brought dead.
Two motorbikes were racing towards Baruipur, when suddenly rammed into an auto-rickshaw. Premendranath Ghosh, a retired BSNL employee was sitting on the rear seat of the auto and he received injuries on his head and chest. The local residents rescued him and the other passengers.
Ghosh's injury was critical. Doctors said his death was primarily due to blood loss. Meanwhile, the local residents started to demonstrate on the spot and complained about the errant driving in the area.
Police arrested the two bike riders and seized their vehicles. The damaged auto-rickshaw was also taken to the police station. The accused bikers did not have driving license. Moreover, one of them was riding without wearing a helmet. After the bikes rammed into the auto, the driver lost control and the vehicle side turned. The driver was also admitted in the hospital, but his injuries were not critical. He was treated and discharged later.
The state government have taken several steps to reduce incidents of road accidents. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started a campaign – 'Safe Drive, Save Life' to create awareness among drivers and pedestrians. "The errant drivers should learn from the Chief Minister's message. The drivers should not be blamed alone. The pedestrians should also be equally responsible for bringing in the change of scenario," said a local resident.
