1 dead, 25 injured as bus topples in front of Domjur Rural Hospital

Kolkata: A man died and at least 25 people were injured after a bus lost control and toppled in front of Domjur Rural Hospital on Monday morning.

According to a source, on Monday morning, a bus carrying a number of passengers was moving towards Howrah from Rajballavhat in Hooghly.

Several passengers were sitting on the roof of the bus. Local residents alleged that the bus was moving at a high speed. When the bus reached the Domjur Rural Hospital, a bicycle came in its way and to avoid collision the driver tried to overtake the bicycle.

The driver managed avoiding hitting the bicycle, but he lost control over the bus while it was moving over a speed breaker.

As soon as the front wheels of the vehicle crossed the speed breakers, the bus hit a milk van, which was parked on the roadside, and toppled. Local residents ran to the spot and started rescuing the passengers.

Though the passengers inside the bus were rescued almost unhurt, the conductor of the bus, identified as Dinabandhu Pakhira, was stuck under the toppled bus.

Later, the police arrived and a crane was used to lift the bus to rescue Pakhira. He was rushed to the Domjur Rural Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

After the accident, the bus driver managed to flee from the spot.

All the injured passengers were rushed to Domjur Rural Hospital. Later, four passengers were shifted to Howrah District Hospital as they condition was critical.

Though sitting in the roof of the bus is strictly prohibited, in rural areas, passengers are allowed to sit on the roof. A case has been registered against the offending bus driver and the police are trying to find him.
